Snapchat – is it just a fad??

Is Snapchat just a fad?

It would be fair to say that most smartphone apps these days have a ‘sell by date’, whether users simply get bored or when it is outdone by the newest fad, they just run out of steam. But with over 400 million ‘snaps’ being sent every single day all over the world, it is hard to imagine how this popular app could just be a fad. Since it’s launch in 2011 it’s popularity has skyrocketed, particularly in the last 12 months, and it now has over 30 million active users.

Go anywhere nowadays and you will see someone trying to subtly send a Snapchat in public, be it on the bus, in shopping centres or even the C.I.T. canteen! Most of my own friends as well as people I’ve spoken to recently, both younger and older than myself, are currently using Snapchat. I have to admit that I am an avid Snapchat user myself and a day doesn’t go by that I don’t use the app. I find myself using it as a way to communicate with friends instead of sending them a text.

This post features some very interesting facts about Snapchat! Check it out –

As well as millions of people using Snapchat as a way to communicate with friends, many businesses are also jumping on the bandwagon and using Snapchat as a channel to reach customers. MTV UK are just one example of a company who have used Snapchat to their advantage. They used Snapchat to stream exclusive content of the sixth series of the show Geordie Shore. They used the fact that Snapchat’s main demographic are aged between 15 and 23, very similar to that of MTV’s Geordie Shore.  This campaign was a success as the clips only lasted 10 seconds, and fans felt as though they were getting live need-to-know information. I thought this was a really clever campaign and I hadn’t ever seen anything like it done previously through Snapchat.
